The Choquequirao Trek, a spectacular journey into the heart of the Andes, is an experience that combines breathtaking natural beauty, cultural immersion, and physical challenge. This trek, less trodden than the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, offers adventurers an exclusive look into Peru’s rich history and stunning landscapes. This comprehensive guide takes you through each day of the trek, providing essential details, tips, and insights to make your journey unforgettable.
Early Morning Departure and Arrival at Capuliyoc
The adventure kicks off with an early morning pickup, between 4-4:30 AM. The drive from Cusco to Capuliyoc spans 4-5 hours, promising awe-inspiring views of the Andean mountains for those awake to witness the sunrise. Upon arrival at Capuliyoc, you’ll meet your support team, setting the stage for the incredible journey ahead.
The Hike to Chikiscca
The first day’s hike is a mostly downhill trek lasting about 2 hours, leading to our lunch spot at Coca Mansana. The route offers splendid views of the Apurimac valley and river, providing a great introduction to the region’s natural beauty. Post-lunch and a brief siesta, we embark on another 2-hour downhill hike to our first campsite, Chikiscca. This small farming village, known for its pleasant weather, will be our resting place for the night, complete with a ‘happy hour’ featuring tea and popcorn, followed by dinner.

Crossing the Apurimac River and Ascending to Santa Rosa
After crossing the Apurimac River, we begin our 2-hour ascent to Santa Rosa for lunch. This stretch is challenging but rewards us with stunning canyon views. Lunch at a local family’s house includes a taste of a traditional sugar cane drink.
The Final Push to Marampata
The post-lunch segment involves a 2-3 hour uphill climb to Marampata. This part of the trek is considered the most challenging but equally rewarding, with breathtaking views of the Andes and the chance to spot condors soaring above.
