5-day itinerary for travelers visiting the Tambopata National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. The itinerary includes a mix of river and forest exploration, led by experienced naturalist guides who help guests spot Amazon flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, caimans, and macaws. The itinerary also includes visits to a macaw clay lick and an oxbow lake, as well as opportunities for swimming and relaxation at the Ecolodge where guests stay. Day 1
68-kilometer road and boat trip along the Tambopata River, observe native flora and Amazon fauna, explore forest trails, slideshow presentation about rainforest’s wonders, guided trail walk to spot nocturnal monkey species and Amazon insects
Day 2
4-6 hour boat ride to spot Amazon fauna, camping near Colorado macaw clay lick, explore forest trails to spot monkeys, tapirs, caimans, oropendolas, and other birds
Day 3
Witness as many as several hundred macaws and parrots at clay lick, late morning forest walk to spot monkeys, explore clear forest stream upriver, spend another evening at campsite
Day 4
Second opportunity to witness the spectacle at the clay lick, hike to oxbow lake to spot wildlife, free time to bathe, relax, or explore gardens, presentation on caimans, search for nocturnal fauna
We will meet you at Puerto Maldonado and take you on a 68-kilometer road and boat trip along the Tambopata River to our Ecolodge. Our experienced naturalist guide will accompany you during the boat trip, where you will have the chance to observe native flora and Amazon fauna. Upon arrival, you will settle into your eco-lodge accommodation and embark on a trail walk in the surrounding forest. You will spot frequently seen fauna such as brown capuchin monkeys, agoutis, blue-morpho butterflies, trogons, toucans, and other bird species. In the evening, you will be awed by a slideshow presentation on the rainforest’s many wonders, followed by a guided trail walk to spot the world’s only nocturnal monkey species and learn about Amazon insects.
After breakfast, you will take a 4-6 hour boat ride deeper into the forest with our naturalist guide to spot Amazon fauna on the riverbanks and in the treetops. You will camp on the beach near Colorado, the world’s largest known macaw clay lick, and spend the afternoon exploring the forest trails in the area in search of Amazon fauna, including monkeys, tapirs, caimans, oropendolas, and other birds.
you will rise early to witness the spectacular arrival of as many as several hundred macaws and parrots at the clay lick to consume small portions of clay, creating a colorful and unforgettable spectacle. After a late morning forest walk in search of monkeys, you will explore a clear forest stream upriver and spend another evening at the campsite.
You will have a second opportunity to witness the spectacle at the clay lick before returning downriver to the Ecolodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will hike with a naturalist guide to an oxbow lake to spot wildlife, including rufescent tiger-herons, great egrets, wattled jacanas, and hoatzins. Back at the Ecolodge, you can enjoy free time to bathe at the swimming hole, relax in a hammock, or explore the gardens. In the evening, you will be fascinated by a presentation on caimans before returning to the river in search of nocturnal fauna.

You will leave the Ecolodge in the morning for the return by river to Puerto Maldonado, observing rainforest fauna from the boat with the help of our naturalist guide. This is an excellent time of day for wildlife observation as the forest awakens.
